There isn't much research out on the use of the iPads/iPods, but there are a lot of success stories. Here is one...
IPads and Autism This is a book titled 'Trueman Bradley - Aspie Detective.' I haven't read it, as it has just recently been released. However, it looks like a great book for ASD.
